What we do

Ocean Environmental provides independent, high quality research and data science to support conservation and sustainable management of the marine environment. We are experts in marine and fisheries research providing statistical and mathematical modelling services, and work at the interface between government and decision makers.

Ocean Environmental is globally connected, using those connections to build trusted relationships and networks, providing robust and novel solutions to ensure conservation and environmentally sustainable outcomes.

We believe in science informed decision making, and we play our part to ensure that the best information is available to decision makers — providing the science to ensure both conservation and sustainability.
About us

Ocean Environmental is led by Alistair Dunn, who has over 20 years of experience as a data scientist in marine environmental research. He started his research career after graduating with degrees in Mathematics from the University of Canterbury and Applied Statistics from the University of Oxford.

Alistair joined New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) as a data scientist, where he focused on developing numerical models to understand New Zealand marine populations.

After leading NIWAs Fisheries Assessment and Monitoring Programme, he joined Fisheries New Zealand in the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). At MPI, he managed New Zealand's Stock Assessment Science Team, chaired the MPI Deep-water Fisheries Assessment Working Group, and represented New Zealand on the Scientific Committee of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

Alistair now leads Ocean Environmental, bringing his experience, technical expertise, and understanding of New Zealand's regulatory framework to provide high quality science to ensure conservation and environmentally sustainable outcomes.
